Generative AI and 3D Printed Firearms
Addressing Emerging Security Threats from AI-Enabled Additive Manufacturing
About This Talk
Invited as an expert speaker to the EMPACT Firearms conference in Madrid, hosted by the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and attended by the National Crime Agency (NCA), Europol, and INTERPOL. Presented on the dual aspects of Generative AI, its benefits and potential risks, specifically in the context of detecting and preventing 3D printed firearms. These weapons pose a unique and serious safety risk, creating an unprecedented challenge: the ability for almost anyone to manufacture a firearm at home with a 3D printer. Discussed how Generative AI could potentially make it much easier for criminals to design and print weapons, and presented policy recommendations for EU member states to balance innovation with public safety.
